Serpentine Asbestos Along With Its Types

Asbestos which has been for thousands of years have become a prime concern to the researchers because of the health risks and diseases associated with it. The researchers have been giving concentration to identify its types so that it can easily be identified. The researchers, so far, have become able to distinguish about six of the types of serpentine asbestos. When there is any discussion regarding asbestos there is a need for the six types that is going to be discussed in the following.

The six serpentine asbestos fibers identified by the US government are

Tremolite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, chrysotile asbestos, amosite asbestos and crocidolit asbestos.

These are the six types that have been recognized till now these are largely classified into two sections those are serpentine asbestos and Amphibole asbestos.

The main difference that has been found between these two major groups is basically in the physical structure. The first group that named as serpentine asbestos is made of minerals that have a coated form and twisted fibers whereas the amphibole group includes minerals that have straight fibers which have again a chain-like structure.

These are made of silky, fine and white fibers. It consists of minerals that are crystallized and it is in serpentine pattern. It basically means that these fibers are consisting of crystals which are produced of sheets. Statistics tell that it is the most common type of serpentine asbestos. Because of the extensive use of this type of fiber, chrysotile asbestos has been responsible for most of the health issues regarding serpentine asbestos.

Asbestos has been used for centuries but it was the people of 1900s who took the initiative to identify the dangerous effect that is caused by asbestosis. Since railway and shipyard departments began to expand heavily in 1800s, the need to find the harmful effects caused by asbestos became a prime concern to the researchers due to save the mankind. Between those two departments it was shipyard that started to use asbestos more frequently. And those who worked on board ship or in the shipyard, it was alarming for them because most of them started to become the victims because of the poisonous effects of asbestos. Workers working in other sectors such as mining industries, steel plants or power plants were also the sufferers of the harmful effect of asbestos.

Asbestos made its place into the plethora of products till about the 1980s, though it had those poisonous and harmful characteristics. In the present world, there might be the presence of asbestos in an indirect form like in dry walls or insulation or in some household products if those houses and buildings were made before the 1970s.

It has been made possible because of the initiative those have taken place on the beginning of the 1900s. Because of the researchers who took the steps to find out the harmful effects of the asbestos to save the mankind from being affected.

But the bad news is that though asbestos carries the harmful characteristics, it is being found in different products at the present time.
